Australia recently committed about 30 crore dollars to improve the life outcomes of its Aboriginal people, as the country marked 15 years since a national apology for forcibly removing Indigenous children from families under old assimilation policies.
It was in 2008, that the then Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd formally apologized to the indigenous people of Australia. The successive governments in Australia removed the Islanders of Aboriginal and Torres Strait. More than 1000s families were forcibly removed from their lands by governments and churches.
He referred to the children of these families as the Stolen Generation. In 1995, the Human Rights Commission of Australia launched a nationwide investigation and collected more than 1000s of stolen generation children. In 1997, “Bringing them Home” was launched. The criticalities of the status of the children shook the world. In 2008, the issue exploded and then PM Kevin apologized for the actions of previous governments. He offered an apology on February 13, 2008. In 2023, the Australian Government is marking the Anniversary of Stolen Generation Apology.
